As you likely know, Windows 10 will reach its end of life on October 14, 2025. While this doesn’t mean your PC will stop working overnight, it does mean that Microsoft will no longer offer free security updates, non-security updates, or technical support. Essentially, you'll be left to maintain the security and efficiency of your system on your own.
If you’ve tried upgrading to Windows 11 but received the dreaded compatibility error, don’t worry! You still have several options available. Let's walk through them and find the best solution for you.
Ignore the Deadline (But Proceed with Caution)
We understand the temptation to continue using Windows 10 past its support deadline. However, once that day arrives, your PC will no longer receive security updates to protect it from cyber threats. Over time, this could leave your business vulnerable to risks like malware or data breaches, and without the non-security updates, your system's performance may begin to degrade.
If security is important to you (and it should be!), we recommend exploring other options for protecting your device beyond the 2025 deadline. But remember, it’s still an option if you’re not ready to make a change just yet.
Switch to Linux
For the tech-savvy among us, switching from Windows to Linux might be a viable alternative. Linux is a free, open-source operating system known for its stability and security. However, moving everything over to a new OS can come with its own set of challenges. Only go this route if you're prepared to manage the transition and troubleshoot issues along the way.
If you’re up for the challenge, Linux could be a great way to breathe new life into an older PC!
Try a Compatibility Workaround
If your PC failed the Windows 11 compatibility test, you might still have a chance to upgrade it using a technical loophole. With some minor tweaks, such as a registry edit and ensuring your PC uses Secure Boot with TPM (Trusted Platform Module), you could bypass the compatibility issue and install Windows 11.
While Microsoft doesn’t officially support this method, many users have successfully switched this way. If you’re feeling adventurous, this could be an option but be sure to back up your data and proceed with care.
Pay for Microsoft’s Windows 10 Extended Security Updates
If you're not ready to upgrade to Windows 11 just yet, Microsoft will offer Extended Security Updates (ESUs) for Windows 10 users until 2028. This subscription-based service ensures that your device receives essential security updates for three additional years.
While this option comes with a cost (and it’s not cheap for businesses), it might give you the breathing room you need to make a more permanent decision down the road. Educators receive a significant discount, making this an affordable short-term solution for schools and educational institutions.
Invest in a New PC
Sometimes, the best option is to start fresh. If your current device shows its age, purchasing a new Windows 11-compatible PC could be smart. Newer computers are faster, more secure, and built to handle the demands of modern work environments. At 10D Tech, we are always on the lookout for good deals on computers that meet our specifications. We purchase them for our clients and only add the set-up cost. If you're in the market, give Dave a call.
Before making any major changes, be sure to back up all your data regularly to prevent the loss of important information during the transition.
